Earthquake rocks Spain

5.3 Richter scale earthquake that shook Spain continued to take casualties. The victim is now increased to at least 10 people. As reported by bbc.com, Thursday (5/12/2011), the quake was centered in the town of Lorca, southern Spain is breaking down some buildings. The depth of the quake was just 1 kilometer or 0.6 mile course from under the sea.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero had previously been ordered to send military troops to areas where the impact of the earthquake to help evacuate victims. The death toll is predicted to continue to grow, considering the number of buildings that collapsed.


The quake struck at a depth of just 1km (0.6 miles), some 120km south-west of Alicante, at 1850 (1650 GMT), the US Geological Survey reported. Lines of cars lay crushed under tonnes of rubble and a hospital was evacuated as a precaution. The quake followed a 4.4-magnitude tremor about two hours earlier. It is not clear how many people were injured, although Spanish media say there are dozens.
