Arab League to fight for Palestine to become United Nations (UN) member. Included in the Palestinian territories is the West Bank and Gaza Strip with its capital in East Jerusalem.
In the Arab League meeting in Doha, Qatar, the Arab League members are pledged to fight for this in the UN meeting in New York, September. Writes Reuters on Sunday (29/05/2011).
"The committee decided to go to the UN and ask for full UN membership for Palestine. Just before the 1967 war, with East Jerusalem as its capital,"the Arab League's decision.
However, this proposal received strong opposition from the U.S. and Israel. President Barack Obama, although supporting the Palestinian territory before the war could get 6 days in 1967, but the objection if the Palestinians become a member of the UN.
To note, there are currently 112 out of 192 countries in the UN which has recognized the Palestinians based on the boundary of 1967. To pass the proposal, need 2 / 3 vote of 192 UN member states. But this plan can be dispersed when the U.S. as a permanent member of UN security council to use its veto to scuttle the Palestinians.
